Atlanta Corporations and Entertainers Partner to Celebrate Eco-Friendly Living at First Annual Green Day Fest
Creative Loafing, Underground Atlanta, MARTA and other businesses wrap-up Atlanta’s Earth Week observance with live music and fun for all ages
Atlanta, Georgia – April 3, 2008 – On April 27th, Atlanta companies, entertainers, artists and residents will join together to celebrate the First Annual Green Day Fest. Presented by Enviro Expo USA and Underground Atlanta, Green Day Fest will honor the culmination of Earth Week with a fun-filled day of live music, “green” arts and crafts, and educational activities for all ages. The event will be held at Underground Atlanta from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will be free and open to the public.
Eco-friendly living is no stranger to metro-Atlanta residents. The recent drought and interest in major sustainable development initiatives has motivated many people to integrate eco-conscious habits into their lifestyles. The Green Day Fest is the area’s first large-scale event to celebrate eco-friendly living in a way that is fun and educational for all ages. This event will wrap up many of the area’s smaller celebrations for Earth Day, Earth Week and Arbor Day
Green Day Fest has attracted sponsorships from prominent Atlanta companies and institutions, each of whom have a strong commitment to making Atlanta a greener, more eco-friendly place to live. Corporate sponsors include Creative Loafing, MARTA, AirTran, Caribou Coffee, Trader Joe’s, Boutier Winery and Active Productions and Designs, Inc. The festival will feature live entertainment for children and adults with a musical line-up produced by World Events, Inc. that includes the League of Decency featuring Tommy Dean and special guest vocalist Francine Reed, Barry Richman Band, A1A, Steve Baskin and Tropical Steel Band.
Children and adults will have the opportunity to learn more about eco-friendly living through interactive exhibits from local and national companies promoting sustainable lifestyles. These exhibits include the Georgia State University Bio-Bus, a 30-foot long, self-contained, mobile science laboratory for school-age children, as well as a display of hybrid cars representing the latest in automobile efficiency. Representatives from the City of Atlanta will also be present to discuss the area’s long and short-term plans to create a greener city, including Mandy Schmitt, director of sustainability for the City of Atlanta
and Terri Lee, the City’s director of housing. From 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., these speakers will introduce an overview of Atlanta’s sustainability efforts as well as discuss the City’s efforts to provide green, affordable housing to residents. Additionally, the event will feature local businesses offering “green” products, arts and crafts.
Green Day Fest will donate a portion of all profits to Camp Twin Lakes, a not-for-profit organization that offers year-round recreational, therapeutic, and educational programs for children facing serious illnesses and other physical, emotional and life challenges. In addition to helping children, Camp Twin Lakes is striving to create a 100 percent eco-friendly facility through the use of sustainable products, minimizing environmental impacts, recycling and energy conservation.
Dianne Bennett, founder of Enviro Expo USA, comments: “Green Day Fest is a great opportunity for people to come together and celebrate the progress we’ve made – and the progress we will continue to make – in creating a more eco-friendly place for us to live our lives and raise our families.” Local businesses are invited to showcase their “green” goods and services at the event.
